While the official release doesn’t give anything more than we already knew in terms of what Joe Quesada’s new “infinite comics” might actually be, Marvel Comics confirmed today that the announcement is going to take place on Sunday at SXSW Interactive, something many have speculated based on the timing of Quesada’s teases.Where his previous icon was merely an infinity emblem in white on Marvel red, today’s Twitter icon incorporates that logo into the word “comics,” and the phrase “Marvel Infinite Comics,” seem to lend some credence to speculation that the announcement may take the shape of rebranding and altering Marvel’s existing digital supscription service, currently called Digital Comics Unlimited. The Marvel “DCU” program, as it’s abbreviated by many, has been something of a branding faux pas since its inception. It brands Marvel’s digital products with a set of initials which have been closely identified with the company’s chief competitor for decades since the DCU, or DC Universe, is where the stories told by DC Comics are set.In full, unedited form, here’s what Marvel’s press release says:
“Join The Revolution. It’s coming to the historic Marvel: House of Ideas, panel Sunday, March 11 at 1pm on the Arcade Stage presented by IGN at the Palmer Events Center in Austin, TX—plus this show is free & open to the public!Stay tuned to www.marvel.com and www.sxswscreenburn.com for more details on the Marvel: House of Ideas panel and Marvel’s plans for SXSW.”
Quesada, meanwhile, continues to use his Twitter feed as a tease for the announcement. “Drawing my first ∞ cover,” he told his followers. “It’s not what you think, but it it kindah is.”
