Scribd, the digital library and ebook and audio subscription service, today added more than 10 thousand comics to their digital library, and available with a regular Scribd subscription. The comics come from a variety of publishers, including Marvel, IDW/Top Shelf, Valiant, Boom! Studios, Dynamite, and Archie.

Scribd isn’t the first company to attempt to apply the “Netflix model” to comics. Marvel itself has a digital comics subscription service, Marvel Unlimited, but the selection is, obviously, limited strictly to Marvel material.
Comparatively, ComicsFix offers access to a variety of smaller publishers, and also hosts Valiana and Dynamite series, but lacks support from bigger publishers like Marvel and IDW, and neither alternative offers access to a previously established library of ebooks and audiobooks.
It’s always exciting to see comics finding new outlets, as it creates the opportunity to attract new readers and grow the industry as a whole. It will be interesting to see how the new comics initiative works out for Scribd going forward.
