Marvel’s Most Unlikely Duo is Back in Iron & Frost #1 First Look (Exclusive)

One of Marvel’s strangest relationships of all is back as Iron Man and Emma Frost team up in the upcoming Iron & Frost comic. The X-Men are no strangers to dystopian futures, and we’re being taken to a brand new one in celebration of thirty years since Age of Apocalypse first released. The villain Apocalypse dedicated himself to culling whoever he considered weak, and creating a world where only the strongest mutants could survive. He’s now gone, but he’s left his mission to his appointed heir, Doug Ramsey, who has inherited his powers. Rechristening himself Revelation, this event takes us ten years into the future, into the Age of Revelation

In this potential dark future, Revelation has used his new powers to turn most of the United States into a supposed mutant utopia, all with the intent of exterminating humanity and the weak from the world. ComicBook has the pleasure of showing a first look of Iron & Frost #1, a tie-in comic from writer Cavan Scott and artist Ruairi Coleman that focuses on the unlikely team of Iron Man and Emma Frost, who previously were briefly married in recent comics. Of course, they only got married for the sake of a plan, and while they quickly divorced, the two found they had a genuine connection neither expected. Even if their marriage didn’t last, they’re coming back together to face an all new threat that could tear down everything both of them love.

Cold Enemies With Hearts of Iron

Our preview and first look into this dark future kicks off with action abundant. Iron Man, War Machine, Firestar, and Emma Frost doing battle with a hefty amount of assailants directly outside of the Avengers Mansion. One of whom is Marrow, a former X-Man turned follower of Revelation, it would seem. The preview doesn’t have any text, so we’ll have to rely on the awesome art to tell us exactly what’s going on, but you don’t need to explain the image of Emma running off towards two civilians cowering behind a car, one of whom has a gas mask one, while the younger one does not.

In a rare moment of gentleness, Emma holds the young girl close, then goes right back to the fight, psychically shutting down the assailant that Firestar doesn’t have pinned down, while Tony and Rhodey handle the one in the air. Our final page shows the older civilian sprawled on the ground, and the young girl having summoned spikes of stone to skewer the person attacking them. Emma stares in horror at the scene, and after blasting the final opponent into a building, Tony turns and is shocked at what he sees. This girl is almost definitely a mutant, potentially transformed by the X-Virus Revelation unleashed, or potentially a natural born mutant. Either way, she’s powerful.

Here’s how Marvel describes Iron & Frost #1: “
Cold as frost, hard as iron! X years later, after 3K’s devastating terrorist attack cost Tony Starka nd Emma Frost everything, the Heartless Queen returns to what remains of her past. Secrets hide int he ruins of New York. The Hellfire Club has a dangerous new leader.”

Iron & Frost #1 goes on sale Wednesday, October 15th.
