The 5 Worst Batgirl Costumes Ever (& One Will Make You Cringe)

Batgirl is one of the most iconic characters that has ever graced DC’s heroic lineup. Many comic book fans know of the different Batgirls who have assisted Batman over the years including Barbara Gordon and Cassandra Cain. Ever since the first iteration of the figure premiered in the Silver Age of comic books, they have been an important part of the Bat-Family. Batgirl aids Batman and Robin in many of the adventures that they go on, and has even starred in numerous solo series that see the heroine, no matter who is under the mask, strike out on their own. Batgirl is comic book royalty and will always be an important part of Batman’s team.

Since the inception of the character, the Batgirls have worn a number of different suits. Many of the costumes are iconic and can easily be identified by comic book fans. However, while there have been some cool suits, there have also been some that were not as impressive. Batgirl has been on the scene for decades, and has seen many different girls and women take on the mantle while wearing different costumes with some just missing the mark. The Batgirls may be one of the most memorable characters in comic books, but these suits simply did not impress.

5) Batman: White Knight

Barbara Gordon made an appearance as Batgirl in the Batman: White Knight mini-series and wore a unique suit that was very different than anything she had worn before. The costume featured a small cape, a unique bat emblem across her chest, and a mask that featured very small bat ears. It stood out from every other suit that Barbara wore over the years since her introduction, but not in a very good way. It stands as one of the worst costumes that the character donned in her years as a superhero.

4) Misfit

Charlotte Gage-Radcliffe, a.k.a. Misfit, took on the name of Batgirl for a short while after Cassandra Cain retired. Charlotte had magical powers that differentiated her from Barbara Gordon and Cassandra, and she wore a suit that stood out from the rest. It featured a denim skirt, leggings, and black high-tops. Charlotte also wore a blue top with her version of the Bat Symbol, and black and yellow cape that was reminiscent of the capes that Barbara would wear. While the suit is unique when compared to anything that the other Batgirls have worn over the years, it feels like a cosplay of the character. The costume does not impress as much as other costumes that Barbara Gordon and Cassandra Cain have worn, and is rather forgettable.

3) Bombshells

Bombshells was a series that featured alternate forms of many of DC’s female characters, including Harley Quinn, Wonder woman, and Supergirl. Barbara Gordon also made an appearance as Batgirl and wore a very unique suit. The costume featured a gold and purple color palette, complete with combat boots and a mask that resembled an aviator helmet. It is one of the sexiest of the Batgirl suits that the character has worn and stood out heavily from what comic book readers would expect from Barbara. Despite this, the costume does not stand up to the ones that other versions of Batgirl have worn and stands out as one of the more forgettable bits of attire that the character has sported.

2) Stephanie Brown

Stephanie Brown is known by her usual alias Spoiler and for spending a short time being Robin. However, there was a short period where she took on the Batgirl mantle as well. During this time she wore a purple suit that took hints from her Spoiler costume, helping her stand out from every other character that took on the Batgirl name. The suit featured the Bat symbol that Batman fans are familiar with while allowing her long, blonde hair to flow out similar to how Barbara Gordon wore her red hair. The purple in the costume did stand out from other iterations of Batgirl, but did not have the same feel that Barbara and Cassandra Cain had with their suits.

1) Original Silver Age

Most comic book fans will associate the role of Batgirl with Barbara Gordon Cassandra Cain. However, there was another character who held the Batgirl mantle for a short time before Barbra was introduced during Batman’s Silver Age run. Bette Kane was the niece of the original Batwoman, Kathy Kane, and was meant to be a love interest for Robin. This iteration of Batgirl wore a suit meant to mirror Robin’s that featured a red top and green cape. This costume was worn by the character before she established her own style that fans know and love, and while we give it points for coordinating with Robin, it simply doesn’t hold up today.
