Supergirl returns for its midseason premiere tonight, but things aren't quite as they seem for the Girl of Steel and in a new scene from tonight's episode, the hero gets some surprising news.

At the end of the midseason finale, Supergirl/Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) was defeated by Reign (Odette Annable) and not only was she defeated, she was very nearly killed. While Supergirl physically survived the fight -- even if barely -- she is still locked in a coma, and as you can see in the video above, that's news to her.

In the clip, Kara meets Brainiac 5 (guest star Jesse Rath), another member of Mon-El's (Chris Wood) Legion of Super-Heroes who explains to Kara that not only is she not really in her loft, but she's been in a coma for the past two days. Of course, it's not just news of her physical and mental predicament that Brainiac 5 brings. He also takes the time to introduce himself -- pointing out his 12th-level intellect, of course -- as well as his role both as a Legionnaire and in inspecting her mind's status.

While some comic book fans might have some questions about Brainiac 5's appearance -- he's more green than blue in comics, something that Rath himself has reacted to -- it's still exciting to see another iconic member of the Legion of Super-Heroes show up. In comics, Brainiac 5 is an important member of the team, his immense intellect and mental capacity allowing him to invent things deeply useful for the team as well as think his way through problems they face.

And they face some big problems in tonight's episode. As we've seen in the extended trailer for tonight's episode, Reign hasn't stopped just because Supergirl is out of commission. She's ready to take the next step, having been told by the hologram at the Fortress of Sanctuary that "it's time to deliver the awakening." It's an awakening that the people of National City definitely do not want, but with Supergirl down, the DEO is left needing help from the Legion while they wait for Supergirl to hopefully return.

We'll see how the Legion of Super-Heroes fare against Reign as well as whether or not Brainiac 5's intervention helps Supergirl wake up when "Legion of Super Heroes" airs tonight.

Supergirl airs Mondays at 8/7c on The CW.
