DC Comics might not have thought their latest promotion for Doomsday Clock all the way through.

Two things will spring to mind when people hear Doomsday Clock, and DC's latest promotional effort took advantage of both of them, and that is sitting very well with fans. The current Doomsday Clock series features the return of the Watchmen, but outside of comics it refers to the clock updated by the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists and tracks the threat posed by nuclear war.

That clock moved forward to two minutes to midnight, and DC tweeted an image representing that in the traditional Watchmen style. At the midnight spot, it featured Superman's symbol, with a caption that reads "Take your mind off the real #DoomsdayClock with DOOMSDAY CLOCK #3, out now."

Well, that evidently isn't sitting very well with some fans, who saw it as taking advantage of a real-world fear to push their book.

"Probably not the best time to tweet something like this @DCComics," @CallyWally19 said.

"Well, it isn't like DC Comics is going to try and tie this into social media marketing or anything... oh wait. Shit," @Malakim2099 said.

"Marketing at the right time, nice move," @boosterblue said.

"Why would DC Comics use today's #DoomsdayClock announcement to promote their new Doomsday Clock comic book? I'll tell ya," @thedorkmite said, posting a panel from the original Watchmen.

The Watchmen story is very much entrenched in the fear and dread that come with nuclear war, but fans still probably didn't expect a direct reference to real-world events like this.

Doomsday Clock #3 is in stores now, and you can find the official description below.

"The story takes a turn in the third chapter of this 12-issue series you never thought you'd see, from writer Geoff Johns and artist Gary Frank."
