Wonder Woman is going to be one of the biggest films of 2017, but upon closer inspection, it doesn’t seem like it is being given the same marketing treatment as other films of its ilk. Granted, every film is handled a bit different, but Warner Bros. own track record is making things a big suspect.

All you really have to do is head to Warner Bros. YouTube page. Upon arriving and pulling up three films for comparison (Wonder Woman, Suicide Squad, and Justice League), you’ll notice a few things. Wonder Woman arrives in theaters on June 2, which is just over 30 days away. You might assume then it would have more videos listed here, but in fact, it only has 5, with two of those being behind the scenes. There are other spots out there, but even accounting for those that number only goes up to around 7 or 8.Compare that to the 30, yes 30 videos that are in Suicide Squad’s playlist, and you’ll start to wonder why such a big gap. Granted, not all of those were released before the film and some are linked to the soundtrack, a big pushing point for Suicide Squad. Many of the videos were released prior though, and even if you take half 15 to 8 is still a rather big chasm.

The issue is even more blatant compared to Justice League. The film doesn’t release until November and already has 7. That doesn’t really jive now, does it? It’s important to note that there is advertising out there for the film, with a variety of posters starring Gal Gadot‘s Diana. At this point though things feel like they should be much further along. Why aren’t there character posters showing the film’s cast, which includes some talented names? Why isn’t there a trailer focusing on Etta Candy, the Amazons, or Ares? Warner Bros. has never been shy about pushing their films in audience’s faces, so why start now with one of your most important films?

Conventional wisdom says that films don’t start really pushing marketing for a film until 3 to 4 weeks prior to release, and that’s all well and good. With a film this important though, maybe conventional is not the way to go. Deadpool sure didn’t do that, with an inspired campaign that captured the public’s imagination. The theme of the campaign so far is quality, but surely most can agree there needs to be much more of it. A branded race car is certainly a step in the right direction.

Wonder Woman hits movie theaters around the world next summer when Gal Gadot returns as the title character in the epic action-adventure from director Patty Jenkins. Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powersโ€ฆand her true destiny.

Wonder Woman is directed by Patty Jenkins and is written by Allan Heinberg, Geoff Johns, and Zack Snyder. The film stars Gal Gadot (Diana Prince/Wonder Woman), Chris Pine (Steve Trevor), Robin Wright (General Antiope), Connie Nielsen (Queen Hippolyta), David Thewlis, Elena Anaya, Lucy Davis (Etta Candy), Danny Huston, Ewen Bremmer, Doutzen Kroes, Samantha Jo (Euboea), Florence Kasumba (Senator Acantha), Said Taghmaoui, Eleanor Matsuura (Epione), Emily Carey (Young Diana), and Lisa Loven Kongsli (Menalippe).

The DCEU continues with Wonder Woman opens in theaters on June 2, 2017, followed by Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020. The Flash, The Batman, Dark Universe and Man of Steel 2 are currently without a release dates.
