Fans left Suicide Squad with mixed feelings about how the iconic villain of The Joker was portrayed by Jared Leto, but the movie still went on to dominate the box office and win an Oscar.

Leto was an oft-vocal defender of his role, saying multiple times that he was cut short on the performance and that there was enough for an entire Joker film left on the cutting room floor; now that David Ayer is moving forward with the Harley-driven Gotham City Sirens, the talk from Leto has shifted to when – or if – the Joker could return.

On the red carpet for The Defiant Ones, Leto teased fans in an interview with ETonline.com, saying that he may know what the news will be.

“I have no idea. I can’t confirmโ€ฆ maybe I know, but I can’t confirm nor deny. There are a lot of moving parts with that stuff and we’ll see what happens next,” he said.

Margot Robbie will reprise her role as Harley Quinn in the spin-off, and she will lead the Siren team that consists of Quinn, Catwoman, and Poison Ivy. Much like Suicide Squad, Gotham City Sirens will follow a group of more villainous characters, but they will be considered the protagonists.

Ayer wrote and directed Suicide Squad, and he has been tapped to return for Gotham City Sirens. For this movie, however, he will only act as the director.

Both Catwoman and Poison Ivy have appeared in previous film incarnations, with Uma Thurman playing Ivy in Batman and Robin and Catwoman having appeared in three separate feature films — Batman Returns, where she was portrayed by Michelle Pfeiffer; Catwoman, played by Halle Berry; and The Dark Knight Rises, played by Anne Hathaway.

The what’s-next question has lingered around Leto and The Crown Prince since the summer blockbuster and while he has already been left out of the upcoming Justice League production, the logical inclusion for Sirens may be just a formality at this point, based on the coyness that Leto left his response.

Justice League arrives in theatres on November 17, 2017; The Flash on March 16, 2018; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020, giving plenty of DC action to come.

Wonder Woman is currently dominating the box office, with Leto saying that he thought the film was as brilliant as the rest of the country has found it.

“I saw the film. I loved it. I thought it was incredible,” he said. “They did such a good job. I watched Wonder Woman as a kid, and I really enjoyed it. I was on the road with my band, 30 Seconds To Mars and we rented out a theater and brought the whole crew. It was really fun. All of us enjoyed it”
