It sounds like Darren Aronofsky would still like a chance to direct a superhero movie.

The director, who is currently promoting his film Mother!, was asked which superhero property he would be interested in helming. As he revealed to CinePop, he’d be willing to lend his unique style to DC Comics‘ Man of Steel.
“I mean, you know, Superman would always be interesting.” Aronofsky explained. “But they’re already deep into reinventing him, so that’s not going to happen for a long time.”
This shouldn’t be surprising to some DC fans, as Aronofsky had previously expressed his interest in making Man of Steel. While he had to pass on the project for personal reasons, it sounds like he’s a fan of the DC Extended Universe film’s end result.
“I thought Zack [Snyder] was a great choice, and I loved his Watchmen movie,” Aronofsky said back in 2014. “I thought it was great. I thought that as a fan of the comic, you couldn’t hope for a better interpretation. I liked the orthodoxy of it.”
With a Man of Steel sequel currently searching for a director, there is an added level of kismet to Aronofsky’s newest comments. So if the auteur were to lend his talents to a Superman project – or any other superhero movie – what would that look like?
Aronofsky’s Superhero Movie
Aronofsky also addressed how he would approach a superhero property, if he got the chance to direct it.
“Well I would always hope to do something unique.” Aronofskyย added. “That’s kind of my goal. I think with those films, you have to be very careful, because they are about communicating with as big of an audience as you possibly can. Audiences who goes to see those films expect a certain type of movie. But I guess a lot of the great superhero titles are done, people have used them up. So now it’s kinda characters that aren’t as interesting. But you never know. We’ll see what comes my way.”
Aronofskyย came pretty close to that opportunity back in 2002, with his adaptation of Batman: Year One.ย The defunct project, which would have potentially starred Joaquin Phoenix, was essentially ahead of its time, according to the director.
“I think we were ahead of our time.” Aronofskyย explained earlier this year. “I was always like; ‘Why can’t we make a more lower-budget rated-R [movie]?’ Just like in comics, you have different brands. And now they’re finally doing that. They’re doing the spinoffs, which is great. This is an exciting time because they’ll be able to take more risks and we won’t be seeing the same superhero movie over and over again.”
