Miguel Ferrer, a prolific actor and voice actor known for his work on NCIS: Los Angeles and several projects with DC Animation, died after a battle with cancer today at age 61. The actor had worked steadily in both screen and voice acting across four decades. Deadline reported the news first, and Comicbook.com has independently verified his passing.

The actor was most recently co-starring as Owen Granger on NCIS: Los Angeles, a show he’d been part of since 2012, though rumors about his health along with a major injury to his character had left his role in question in recent weeks and months. He was just revealed today as the voice of Deathstroke the Terminator in Teen Titans: The Judas Contract, a new animated film coming later this year. Due to the early production of animation, his role was recorded several months ago; now that sadly becomes one of his final projects.

While he had several guest starring appearances and supporting roles in the 1980s, his breakout was as FBI Agent Albert Rosenfield in Twin Peaks. He also played the pivotal role of Lloyd Henreid in The Stand mini-series that adapted Stephen King’s seminal work, and began voice acting in 1998. As a voice actor, he can be heard in Disney’s Mulan, Superman: The Animated Series, Jackie Chan Adventures, The Spectacular Spider-Man, and as the immortal villain Vandal Savage in Young Justice. He starred for six years in Crossing Jordan in the early 2000s, had a guest appearance in Iron Man 3, and is due to appear in the resumed Twin Peaks series. He also appeared in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and the original Robocop film.

In an interesting bit of comic book trivia, the Spider-Man of 2099, created by Peter David, was named Miguel after Ferrer. The writer and actor were friends.
