Cavill first starred as Superman in 2013’s Man of Steel, which officially kicked off DC’s cinematic superhero universe. Chris Ratliff came across some photos of Cavill in the test suit for the film, which features a different take on the iconic symbol.

“Some neat photos I came across of @henrycavill in a test suit for Man of Steel,” Ratliff said. “The suit itself can be seen on a mannequin in the special features of the movie ๐Ÿ”ฅ #superman #manofsteel #henrycavill #supermancosplay #supermancostume.”

As you can see in the photo below, the symbol differs from the final version with one big change. The movie version features a goldish yellow in the symbol, but the test version just features the red symbol on the blue suit. The red on the symbol also features a glossier finish.

With the glossier finish on the S, it makes sense that they went with a yellow color to make it pop on camera. If they had used this brighter red you might not need that as much, but guess we’ll never know. The color of the suit is also a brighter blue, but director Zack Snyder typically favors a color filter that mute’s those colors a bit, something common in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League as well. Though it should be said that effect in Justice League was lessened.

Man of Steel carried a budget of $225 million and brought in over $291 million at the domestic box office. Internationally it did even better, bringing in $377 million. That adds up to a worldwide total of over $668 million, which is not a bad return, though reviews of the movie were a bit mixed at the time.

Cavill has reprised the role of Superman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League since, and rumors of a Man of Steel 2 have bubbled for some time.

Man of Steel currently has a 67.95 on ComicBook.com’s composite ranking, and you can submit your vote here.

Justice League is in theaters now.
