Seemingly confirming that the core of the team will remain mostly unchanged from the comics, Suicide Squad director David Ayer took to Twitter to tease his forthcoming movie Gotham City Sirens with a image featuring Harley Quinn, Catwoman, and Poison Ivy.
Gotham City Sirens the name of a comic book series that starred Harley, Catwoman, and Poison Ivy (Harley's girlfriend). Previous rumors have suggested that the movie could be called Birds of Prey -- the name of a superheroine team led by Batgirl/Oracle Barbara Gordon and occasionally starring Catwoman -- but Sirens likely gives Ayer more room to develop the so-bad-she's-good Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad.
Robbie, already a rising star, has been catapulted to megastardom by the success of Suicide Squad. She was recently named IMDb's biggest star of the year, and won a Critics Choice Award for the part.
Both Catwoman and Poison Ivy have appeared in previous film incarnations, with Uma Thurman playing Ivy in Batman and Robinand Catwoman having appeared in three separate feature films -- Batman Returns, where she was portrayed by Michelle Pfeiffer; Catwoman, played by Halle Berry; and The Dark Knight Rises, played by Anne Hathaway.
Geneva Robertson-Dworet, whio also wrote scripts for the Tomb Raider remake and Warners' Sherlock Holmes 3, is writing the screenplay. Suicide Squad director David Ayer will return to Gotham along with Margot Robbie, who will play Harley Quinn again.
Other than the "#Sirens4ever" hashtag, Ayer gave nothing really to go on -- and certainly he could just be using stock "Gotham City Sirens" art. Given his commitment to getting barely-remembered characters like Enchantress and Rick Flag for Suicide Squad, it seems likely he'll attempt to keep the comics cast as in place as he can.
With big box office success, it seemed likely Warner would be looking to Suicide Squad as a brand rather than just a stand-alone franchise, and that seems to be the case: the studio is reportedly still developing a Suicide Squad sequel, as well as eyeing a solo movie for Deadshot, Will Smith's character. Both of those rumors have been around for months and today's report on Sirens offered no new insight on them, so it looks like no news is good news.
