With Wonder Woman out in theaters, fans now know the origin story of the warrior princess who first appeared on screen, played by Gal Gadot, in last year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. They also now know that Princess Diana’s journey to become Wonder Woman included a tearful farewell with her mother, Queen Hippolyta.

When Diana left her hidden island home of Themiscyra with Steve Trevor, Hippolyta gave her the gift of her aunt Atiope’s headpiece and warned Diana that she can never return. Diana left and, presumably, has not seen her mother since.

When ComicBook.com spoke to Connie Nielsen, who plays Hippolyta, in May she explained what she believed a reunion between Diana and Hippolyta would be like.

“After I get done hugging her forever (laughs), I think that you know she’s going to probably tell us to stop hiding, and stop being afraid of the world, that there is a world that changed out there,” Nielsen said.

Hippolyta seemed like a queen who was quite set in her ways, reluctant to even allow Diana to train with Antiope at first. It seems unlikely then that Hippolyta could be convinced to lead the Amazons out of hiding on Themiscyra, but then again, most everything Hippolyta did she did out of love for Diana. If anyone could convince her to return to the world of man, it would be Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman currently has an 88.46 ComicBook.com Composite Score. It also has a 4.42 out of 5 ComicBook.com user rating, making it the third-highest rated comic book movie ever among ComicBook.com readers. Before she was Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), she was Diana, Princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, Diana meets an American pilot (Chris Pine) who tells her about the massive conflict that’s raging in the outside world. Convinced that she can stop the threat, Diana leaves her home for the first time. Fighting alongside men in a war to end all wars, she finally discovers her full powers and true destiny.

Wonder Woman is directed by Patty Jenkins, from a screenplay by Allan Heinberg & Geoff Johns, story by Heinberg & Zack Snyder and Jason Fuchs, and stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, Elena Anaya, Lucy Davis, Saรฏd Taghmaoui, Ewen Bremner and David Thewlis.
