Progression Of League Of Legends’ New Urgot Through Concept Art

The final product is what most players get to see in-game when a new champion is released or an old one is reworked in League of Legends, but the final product is only the culmination of many steps that were taken in the champion’s design. Urgot’s reveal has given players some of the most impressive and up-to-date splash arts that we’ve seen for his base model and skins, and the artist who worked on Urgot’s new splash art, Victor Maury, has shared some of his concept designs that were created as the artist worked with Urgot’s design team to craft the updated champion.

“Big congrats as always to the Urgot crew for their inspiring work on this project!” said Maury on his post about Urgot’s main splash art. “Thankful to be on a team where we’re willing (and eager) to get into the nitty-gritty of what makes a champion tick, really got to geek out on this one.”

In addition to the splash, Maury shared some of Urgot’s concept art and discussed how the champion changed throughout the process. While the new Urgot seeks to eliminate the Chem-Barons of Zaun, Maury said one of the initial ideas discussed was to make him into a Chem-Baron, a mafia leader, before the team turned him into a “more serious prison escapee” character.

When designing the new Urgot, Maury and the team went through several different versions. A sleezy boss, a champ more mechanized than man, and a tick-like design were a few of the concepts that were toyed with. Some up-close bust designs were created to try out some more out-there ideas.

“Some of them were intentionally more goofy to see if Urgot should be more ‘weird’ vs ‘gross’ or ‘scary,’” Maury said. “A lot of these concepts I knew went too far but we wanted some concepts to shake up some of our preconceptions about what Urgot was and wasn’t.”

Urgot isn’t his first swing at splash arts for champs though, as Maury is also behind the new Galio and Warwick splash arts, both of which look fantastic as well.
