Microsoft announced a little earlier this year that it was looking to revamp its digital Avatar system that was made popular on the Xbox 360, with a few tweaks to allow gamers to create their ideal virtual character for their game system. While it’s still a system that’s in the works, we’ve gotten a closer look at how it’s coming together, thanks to the folks at Windows Central.

Those who are currently in the Xbox Alpha Ring can play around with the Xbox Avatar Editor over in Windows 10, though they still can’t many tweaks just yet. However, based on the screenshots we’ve seen from the system (which you can see in the attached gallery), there’s a lot to look forward to.
The Avatars themselves look like they have much more depth than the Xbox 360 editions, with more facial details, outfit designs and more. And you can tweak a number of options on characters, including costumes, hats, tops, dresses, bottoms, leggings and shoes. This will also open up the potential of more outfits being available for Avatars, promotional and otherwise.
But they aren’t just still figures. You can also change up their expressions quite a bit, and even add little things depending on how your character measures up, even if folks are pregnant or require any sort of prosthetic. You can also adjust limbs, facial hair and even fingernails, in case you want them very short or Freddy Krueger-style.
Color skin tones are also available, depending on how you’re in the mood for.
Microsoft has noted that the original Avatar system for Xbox 360 will be kept separate, and will remain active, so those of you that have gotten used to your old look on that system can keep it. This is mainly for Xbox One and making a character that’s far more detailed. You can check out Microsoft‘s official trailer for the new Avatars below.
They don’t have a launch date just yet, but they’re expected to come out for Xbox One sometime later this year. Hopefully, they’ll add a cool social arc for players to get more involved with their profiles – just like Xbox 360.
