The only question on the minds of Xbox fans around the world for months has been, “When can we pre-order the Xbox One X?” Microsoft is promising the most powerful home console in the world, and we just can’t wait to get our hands on one. Well prepare for a busy weekend because Tom Warren, senior editor at The Verge, has revealed that pre-orders are going to go live this Sunday.

“Xbox One X preorders will go live Sunday after the Gamescom press event.” Microsoft’s big Xbox event is scheduled to kick off on Sunday, August 20, at 2PM Central time. We expect the event to last at least an hour, and so it’s possible that pre-orders will go live at 3. That’s not a guarantee, of course, and you’ll have to be very vigilant on your end if you want to secure one.
While we currently have to regard this as an unofficial statement (Warren doesn’t work at Microsoft, obviously), we knew that news about Xbox One X pre-orders were on the way today anyway. Yesterday Phil Spencer responded to someone on Twitter who wanted to know if we could expect any news about pre-orders out of Gamescom. Spencer responded by saying that we would have more information about that today and, well, now we have more information.
We’re very much looking forward to Microsoft’s show on Sunday, because with Crackdown 3 pushed back to 2018, we’re wondering how strong of a software launch potential Xbox One X owners can look forward to. Nintendo proved that you don’t necessarily need an all-star launch lineup on day-one in order to succeed, but you do need at least one system seller. Every time we brought up the Switch, we brought up Breath of the Wild. The Xbox One X doesn’t really have a game like that right now, and it needs one.
We’ll have more in the coming days as Spencer officially shares details about pre-orders, and we’ll have live coverage of Microsoft’s event out of Gamescom in Germany, so stay tuned!
