Surprise! Final Fantasy IX Now Available For PlayStation 4

Just one day after we uncovered a PEGI rating indicating it was coming, Square Enix let the cat out of the bag and revealed that Final Fantasy IX was set for a PlayStation 4 release. But not content on letting us wait for the PlayStation 1 classic to come around, the company surprised people even further by releasing it today.

The game, which can be downloaded here, is being offered as a Digital Edition, going for $16.79 (a few bucks off its regular $20.99 price). Similar to last year's Final Fantasy VII release, the game includes cutscenes remastered in high definition, along with a number of earnable Trophies and boosters that allow you to earn weapons faster, and level up your characters properly. The Tantalus Theatre Troupe visits the Kingdom of Alexandria to help celebrate Princess Garnet's birthday. However, the troupe is actually a group of thieves and their real intension is to kidnap the princess! Meanwhile, a young black mage called Vivi arrives to watch their performance but is at a loss when he realises that he only has a forged ticket…

While around $16 may be a bit on the steep side for some, it's definitely a classic that's worth revisiting, especially if you've already purchased a number of the previous Final Fantasy games, like the remaster of Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, which came out earlier this summer. No doubt you'll get plenty of mileage out of this one as you relive the adventure and have a ball with the Tantalus Theater Troupe.
