Sci-Fi D&D Fans Rejoice, Neon Odyssey Has Everything You Could Ever Need

Avantris Entertainment has cooked up another impressive expansion to Dungeons and Dragons content through Neon Odyssey, a sci-fi themed trilogy of books for the TTRPG’s 5th edition. Following the massive Kickstarter success of folk horror D&D 5e adventures through Crooked Moon, Avantris’ Neon Odyssey is their largest work to date, featuring everything fans of the sci-fi genre could love. Nostalgic homages to Cowboy Bebop, retro video games, Star Wars, Cyperpunk, 80’s synthwave, and cosmic horror are all concepts that blend together in Neon Odyssey for a dynamic setting with plenty of stories to explore.

Neon Odyssey is planned to arrive to Kickstarter in May 2026, with special bonuses and rewards for backers, such as an exclusive dice set and other accessories. Considering how Crooked Moon‘s folk horror adventures raised nearly $4 million on Kickstarter, the most for a D&D project, Neon Odyssey already has the makings of success early. Considering how Neon Odyssey spans three entire books and nearly 1,400 pages of content, it almost raises the bar for fans of both Avantris Entertainment and TTRPGs in general to be excited for.

Neon Odyssey is full of nostalgia toward the sci-fi genre, in all of its aspects across popular culture. The three books in this project conduct an opera across the stars that players of D&D‘s 5th Edition can pick up and play easily, with tools for both Game Masters and players alike. Cinematic and vibrant adventures in a totally custom space setting provide the perfect backdrop for fans to create their own stories or adopt one from the Stardust Rhapsody campaign ran by members of Avantris Entertainment.

The scale of Neon Odyssey‘s content is staggering, featuring an entire galaxy’s worth of variety for players to explore. Everything sci-fi fans could want is here, from ancient lore about distant planets, sleek and stylish environments within neon-soaked cities, or memorable space-faring characters parties will latch onto. Whether it’s the vibrant 80’s feel of something straight out of Flash Gordon or the feel of a classic sci-fi game like Mass Effect, Neon Odyssey has a nearly endless array of different themes from the genre to explore.

Neon Odyssey Contains Three Different Books Full Of Interesting Gameplay Additions & Twists

The D&D 5e supplemental content offered through Neon Odyssey is vast, with each book in the collection providing something different. For starters, the Outrunner’s Handbook gives players everything they need to get started, including unique rules related to space combat and character creation. The core D&D classes have been re-skinned to fit the sci-fi theme of Neon Odyssey, with some new subclasses for each being created as well. A personal favorite is the Gridrunner, the new name for the Wizard class, whose new “Virus” subclass may be a go-to for my next character.

The Outrunner’s Handbook, much like the Player’s Handbook for D&D, also provides new species and background’s to help players make their own character. An Outrunner someone makes could be a reptilian Saurian, a neon-clad Glowblin, or even an Oozoid that breaks the mold of what a “traditional” D&D character looks like. 30+ new species and 40+ new subclasses offer even more interesting paths for your Outrunner, with the brand-new Machinist class offering even more as a engineer/technomancer who creates marvelous inventions to help out their party.

The Cosmic Codex acts similarly to a Monster Manual in Neon Odyssey, representing the second book in the collection for Game Masters who want to run their game within this sci-fi expansion. Not only does this book gives GMs the Stardust Rhapsody setting and potential adventures, but it also provides things like monsters, missions, worlds, magic items, realms, and much more. Huge mega cities to explore are paired with nearly 300+ space vehicles and monsters in the Codex, with rules for cinematic space combat clear in both it and the Handbook.

To take their galaxy-wide stories further, players can also get the third book in Neon Odyssey โ€” the Overdrive Expansion. This book includes more of the content from the other two books, but with optional and advanced systems on top of them. Ship upgrade systems, rules for professions, unique downtime options, and even guidelines to high-speed sci-fi racing are all present in the Expansion. The huge range of mechanics here are suited for endless variation and replayability for your group, all within a clear package that has robust synergy at every step.
