5 Features Minecraft Still Needs to Add After 15 Years (Including a Big Villagers Upgrade)

Minecraft has been around for a little over 15 years, and it has changed quite a bit during that span. Updates have drastically altered the game, and it has so many things that weren’t even considered when Mojang was first making Minecraft. But as evidenced by the fact that these updates keep coming, there are still plenty of things Minecraft needs to become better. With that in mind, here are the five things that still need to be added to Minecraft in the next update.

1. More End Structures

The End has been in need of an update for a very long time. It’s arguably the most exciting place in Minecraft, but it’s hardly worth going to. Once you’ve defeated the Ender Dragon, there’s not much reason to stick around. It’s exceptionally dangerous, and if you die, the odds are high that you will not get your items back. That makes it a pretty needless risk when all you can really get is an Elytra.

While an Elytra is useful, it’s not quite worth the risk that exploring the End entails. To make the dimension a little more worth visiting, there needs to be more structures with better loot. If the Nether can get a whole update, adding items, structures, and biomes, then the End should, too.

2. New Roles for Existing but One-Dimensional Mobs

There are always new mobs being added to Minecraft, but maybe Mojang should take a break and focus on existing mobs. So many of the most recent mobs that have been added serve one purpose only. There are quite a few examples of this: Axolotl, Allay, Sniffer, Glow Squid, and Goat.

Instead of adding a new mob every single update, Mojang should instead find more uses for these mobs. The Sniffer is cool, but it’s not all that useful. The Axolotl is adorable, but what purpose does it really serve? Let’s give the existing mobs more to do before flooding the game with even more one-note mobs. On that note, make the bat useful as well.

3. New Crops

Farming in Minecraft is actually a lot of fun. Setting up a garden, harvesting crops, and repeating the process is one of the coziest aspects of the game. It can be really helpful, too, as it provides food, trading ammunition for emeralds, and more. Unfortunately, it’s a little bit limited right now.

You can really only grow wheat, potatoes, melons, pumpkins, beetroot, and carrots. There are so many other gardening options that would be fantastic additions to the game, like tomatoes, beans, and some fruit. This would also diversify the food options in the game, which is never a bad idea.

4. More Villager Jobs

Villagers have a ton to do, but there can always be more. In fact, maybe some villager jobs that aren’t all that useful (like shepherd or butcher) could be swapped out for something more useful. Either way, villagers need more diversity when it comes to what they’re doing. And on that note, there should be more options for villagers naturally spawning in villages instead of the same few roles over and over again.

There are mods that accomplish this, and some of the proposed jobs should definitely come to vanilla Minecraft, such as Netherologist, Forester, Enderologist, Engineer, Florist, Hunter, and Miner. There are so many real-world jobs that could be fun in Minecraft, so Mojang should add some of them as soon as possible.

5. More Tameable Pets

There are tameable pets that you can keep in Minecraft, but they include pretty much just dogs (tamed wolves) and cats. In the pantheon of pets, that’s a small fraction of the potential options. Horses sort of qualify since you have to tame them before you can place a saddle on them, but it’s not the same. Foxes aren’t tamed, they’re just captured.

There are a lot of different choices here for new pets: hamsters, pet fish (like in a fish tank, not just swimming in the water), and lizards. But at the same time, some existing mobs should become tameable, too. Foxes, llamas, goats, frogs, rabbits, turtles, and axolotls would make nice, legitimate pets.
