Long ago, Fortnite began changing seasons to allow for different changes to take place. A new battle pass, which is the bread and butter of any free live-service game, comes along with new items, locations, characters, and other tweaks to Fortnite’s island. It’s the best way for a game like this to keep things fresh and evolving. These seasons of Fortnite’s history are distinct from one another, which can be good or bad. Sometimes, the changes are not well-received, like in Chapter 5 Season 3. Other times, the new Fortnite season ends up being incredible. Here are the best examples of that.

4. Chapter 2 Season 4
Chapter 2 Season 4 was the first major collaborative season Fortnite had. Before that, collaborations did happen, but not to the extent that they do now. It was incredibly cool to see so many characters from Marvel included at once. Plus, the map, weapons, and characters from this season were impeccable.
The storyline, with Galactus trying to devour the Fortnite universe and take the Zero Point, was an excellent merger of two worlds as well. This season’s pass remains one of the best battle passes the game has had, with Tony Stark, Doctor Doom, and Thor all having really great skins added to the game. Since then, Fortnite has had another Marvel season, a DC season (although not to the same extent), and a Star Wars season, and none have quite hit the same.
3. Chapter 5 Season 1
A groundbreaking season deserves a ton of praise. Fortnite again underwent a significant, irreversible change in Chapter 5 Season 1. Aside from this season also marking the addition of LEGO, Festival, and Rocket Racing modes, it completely changed Battle Royale. Scoping into a first-person view was totally new, as was the ability to add different weapon attachments to change your gun to something that, in theory, other players didn’t have, as opposed to both players having a Legendary Assault Rifle, for example.
It also introduced medallions, which have sometimes been way too overpowered, but are generally a really fun addition to the gameplay. At the time, it felt jarring with all the changes, especially after Season OG, but looking back, there have really been no better seasons since. It is fair to criticize the changes since they got away from some defining aspects of Fortnite, but the gameplay was fun enough to overlook a potential “jumping the shark” moment.
2. Chapter 3 Season 1
Chapter 3 Season 1 introduced new movement mechanics that truthfully changed Fortnite forever. Sprinting and sliding are such fantastic additions to the game that have since become inextricably linked with the gameplay. There was a decent amount of lore infused into this season with the literal flipping of the island and the arrival of Dwayne Johnson’s The Foundation, too.
The best part, though, had to be the swinging as Spider-Man. That skin is great, but the Mythic Webshooters are unmatched in terms of mobility items. There was just something special about being able to swing across the island like that, and Fortnite hasn’t really had anything on that level since. The Daily Bugle was a great POI, as was Sanctuary, The Joneses, and more. It also featured the return of Tilted Towers, which is always good.
1. Chapter 1 Season 5
Chapter 1 Season 5 was when Fortnite really changed for the better. It has perhaps the best map any season has ever had, which features amazing POIs like Tilted Towers, Lazy Links, Risky Reels, Lonely Lodge, and Paradise Palms. But the biggest thing that made this season stand out was the introduction of golf carts. Finally, Fortnite had some useful movement. Before this, it was really hard to get around, which made landing at some of the fun, fringe locations virtually impossible. Additionally, the battle pass was really strong with skins like Drift, Sun Strider, and Ragnarok. Chapter 1 of Fortnite was arguably the game’s peak, and this season was the best of that Chapter, which makes it effectively the best season to date.
