Last month Three Fields Entertainment announced Danger Zone, a spiritual successor to the Burnout series’ uniquely entertaining Crash Mode. For those who never played classics like Burnout 3: Takedown, Crash Mode was all about driving as poorly as possible – rather than avoiding fellow cars and obstacles, your goal was to rack up points by stringing together the craziest collisions possible.

Most of the folks at Three Fields used to work at Burnout developer Criterion, making them well qualified to create Danger Zone. Here’s what Three Fields CEO Fiona Sperry had to say about the explosive project:

“We are going back to our roots by creating a game in a genre we are truly passionate about. Danger Zone takes what made the Crash Mode featured in 2004’s Burnout 3: Takedown so popular and transforms it into an all-new car-crashing, arcade-style puzzle game. We look forward to engaging those sane fans by delivering an entirely new and extremely fun experience.”

Of course, it’s one thing to say you’re making a Crash Mode successor, but people aren’t going to be convinced until they see the exploding cars for themselves! Thankfully, we now have our first Danger Zone trailer, which you can check out, above. It’s brief, but it manages to pack a lot of destruction into 45 seconds.

Here’s some of the features promised by the Danger Zone website:

“Powered by Unreal Engine, Danger Zone combines real physical crashes with explosive gameplay. Shunt vehicles into oncoming traffic, take down trailers to shed their payloads and use your explosive ‘SmashBreaker’ to move your vehicle around. The more explosions you cause, the bigger your score. If you’re feeling burnt out by congestion and jammed roads, take the highway to the Danger Zone. Take your revenge on rush hour traffic. This place is a paradise for those who like their driving flame-grilled.

Features:

– Single Player Game Mode featuring 20 unique crash testing scenarios.

– Connected Leaderboards allow comparison of player scores between Friends and the whole world.”

Danger Zone careens onto PC and PS4 on May 30.
