EA Game Shoots Up Xbox Charts After Going Free

A controversial EA game released last year — which flopped at launch — is shooting up the Xbox charts a year later after being added to Xbox Game Pass. In other words, millions of Xbox Series X users can now download the EA game at no extra cost, and many are taking up Microsoft and EA on this offer, showing the potential the game had, and the potential the latter ultimately squandered.

Back at the end of last month, on August 28, EA and Microsoft added Dragon Age: The Veilguard to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and Xbox Game Pass PC. Unfortunately, it was not made available via Xbox Game Pass Standard or Xbox Game Pass Core, yet, despite this, it’s still drawing in many curious players. As True Achievements reports, the BioWare RPG has gained over 1,500% more players since launching on Game Pass. Consequently, after not being on the most-played Xbox games chart since its launch, it shot back to number 33. How many are sticking with the BioWare RPG? We do not know, but there is clearly a strong interest.

Free Is The Right Price

Dragon Age is a popular series. Over 12 million people played Dragon Age: Inquisition, the game before Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Meanwhile, Dragon Age: Origins is one of the best RPGs of all time. Dragon Age: The Veilguard did not flop due to a lack of interest in the series, but due to a lack of quality, and because it got sucked up into the ongoing culture war in gaming, which proved very negative for it. That said, those millions of Dragon Age fans didn’t just disappear, so it’s not that surprising to see many checking it Dragon Age: The Veilguard now that they do not have to pay directly for it.

While many Xbox Game Pass subscribers are checking out Dragon Age: The Veilguard, it doesn’t seem many are enjoying it. We do not have strong evidence of this, but the lack of posts on the Xbox Game Pass Reddit page suggests as much. When a new game is added to Xbox Game Pass that attracts a lot of interest, the result is usually a flood of posts about it on the Xbox Game Pass Reddit page, if the impression is positive. The lack of posts may suggest the impression has not been very positive.

Meanwhile, this number could even be higher if not for the fact that it was already made free with PlayStation Plus earlier this year. PlayStation Plus is obviously not available on Xbox, but those with subscriptions to both already had the chance to check the RPG out for free. All of that said, and as always, feel free to leave a comment letting us know what you think. Will you be checking out Dragon Age: The Veilguard now that it is free with Xbox Game Pass?
