Obsidian Entertainment’s own corner of Bethesda‘s Fallout universe, New Vegas, was a huge hit with fans of the role-playing genre. With its post-apocalyptic settings rooted in the Mojave Wasteland, the Las Vegas-inspired title originally was supposed to be much different.

In a recent interview, Obsidian’s CEO Feargus Urquhart gave fans of the RPG series a never before seen inside look at the process behind New Vegas. There was a lot of discussion during the game’s development on what direction they wanted to take and one of those paths for potential gameplay was that of three playable races. Players have voiced in the past that this would be something they’d be interested in, and it seems that it almost came to be, “Originally we had this idea where the player would be able to choose between three races: human, ghoul and super mutant.”

According to Urquhart, the mechanics just weren’t supportive of that creative direction. He mentioned that with the interchangeability of the weapon and armor sets within the game, Bethesda was very much not against the idea. They didn’t give a full on “no,” but the decision was definitely implied. “It wasn’t like they said no but it was a very strongly worded, ‘We would really suggest that you not try to do that.’”

The available races to play as wouldn’t have been the only difference in the beloved game. Apparently even the title went in a different direction during theย developmentalย process, “We put together a very short pitch, probably three pages.ย The first time we pitched it we pitched it asย Fallout: Sin City. Very quickly it got changed toย Fallout: Vegasย and then becameย Fallout: New Vegas.”

It’s interesting to see how many changes a title can go through before it hits the shelves. It’s enough to make fans of the franchise wonder “what could have been?”ย

The team over at Obsidian Entertainment has had a lot to say in recent times, even delving into a Game of Thrones game that almost came to be as well as the Xbox One exclusive RPGย Stormlands that never took off.ย
