The remaster of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was an open secret for quite some time. Even so, fans were surprised and delighted when Bethesda actually shadow-dropped the remaster earlier this year. Since then, fans have been keeping a close eye on the developer’s social media for hints and clues about the next big remaster. On September 20th, one of Bethesda’s early RPGs hit a milestone. Naturally, that means fans are asking the team for a big remaster, and the perfect opportunity to give us one is coming up.

Today, Bethesda’s official social media shared a quick post to wish The Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall a happy 29th birthday. The post features some skeletons in party hats and a nicely placed cake in a good old dungeon. But of course, Bethesda can’t really celebrate its older Elder Scrolls entries anymore without provoking fans to immediately respond with remake requests. But while 29 might not be a round number, 30 certainly is, leading some fans to hope a Daggerfall remaster could happen in 2026.
Fans Hopeful for Daggerfall Remaster on Game’s 30th Anniversary
The top response to Bethesda’s lighthearted 29th birthday tweet demands a remake. Specifically, @SpeedGod_CDN says, “A remake for the 30th anniversary would be dope. Do it Bethesda.” And the text is accompanied by the classic “Shut up and take my money” Futurama meme. Bethesda’s happy birthday message doesn’t promise or even hint at a remaster, but this fan isn’t the only one getting their hopes up.
The Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall released on September 20th, 1996. In the second Bethesda RPG set in Tamriel, players explore a procedurally generated dungeon on a mission to acquire a long-lost weapon. Though it plays quite differently from more modern Elder Scrolls games, it’s chock full of lore that helps build out the world, making it a must-play for fans eager to see where it all began.
That said, this aging game doesn’t hold up as well as more recent entries from the Elder Scrolls franchise. In fact, it’s so old, Bethesda is giving it away for free on Steam. But as much as players might have nostalgia for the game, its age is definitely showing with the graphics and overall playability. Daggerfall can feel repetitive, offering randomized quests that can wind up feeling pretty similar. Despite that, the character builds still offer complexity that some fans enjoy revisiting, especially for the price of $0.
As much as some Elder Scrolls fans still go back for this classic, it could arguably use a remaster more than Oblivion. But the task is likely a bigger one as well, since the game is quite different from what modern RPG audiences might expect from Elder Scrolls. Despite the fact that Bethesda has promised nothing in the way of more remasters, many fans are hoping this 29th birthday post is their way of teasing something big for the game’s 30th anniversary in 2026.
If not a full remaster, fans like @Pr0t3k on Reddit are at least hoping for a physical re-release or collector’s edition. Given how different Daggerfall is compared to modern games, this is probably the more likely route, if anything. No such plans have been confirmed or even hinted at just yet, but you may want to mark your calendar to check on Bethesda’s socials September 20th, 2026… just in case. I know I will.
