To celebrate the new year, several Japanese companies are announcing plans and teasing updates that players can expect throughout 2018. One of these updates came from Naoki Yoshida, director and producer of Final Fantasy XIV, who published a new blog post to reflect on the year before and celebrate plans just on the horizon.

Yoshida, who also goes by the nickname Yoshi-P, said that 2017 was a fantastic year for the game. “The release of our second expansion, Stormblood, was a great success, and we’ve seen more players online than ever before,” he said, thanking players for their support and loyalty. Stormblood not only brought in new players to Final Fantasy XIV, but kept the game’s large audience engaged in a way that other Final Fantasy games previously couldn’t capture.

He went on to confirm that the game’s first major update for 2018 is coming at the end of January. He also confirmed that the company planned on having another Fan Festival, saying that “with a year’s worth of preparation going into the event anything can happen,” but that it would take about a year to see the results of their current efforts. What’s more, Yoshida says that there are plans for something “more” than fan festivals, stating that he has “already settled on plans for another event over a year from now.”

Regarding the game itself, Yoshida said that he received another “prophetic message,” which is just a fun way of saying he had a teaser to deliver. Check it out below:

“Strange… I was expecting perhaps another ancient Eastern proverb, or even a passage from the diary of the late Archon Louisoix,” wrote Yoshida. “What could this mean for the future of the realm? I suppose we can only speculate until the truth reveals itself.”

If Yoshida is to be believed (and he is), updates on all fronts are coming soon regarding everything mentioned above, so stay tuned for more here.
