We’ve analyzed the new gameplay footage for Insomniac’ Games’ Spider-Man for PlayStation 4 a few times now, but it never hurts to get some input from a person that knows what goes into a great project featuring the web-slinger…and that’s exactly what Chris Baker has done.

Baker has served as a manager for Marvel’s games division for the past seven years, making sure that projects have been kept “on brand” when it comes to matching the tone and style of particular stars. In other words, he knows his stuff. And even though he’s no longer on the Marvel team, he’s put a lot of thought into Insomniac Games’ latest effort, even breaking down the gameplay footage that debuted at E3 a couple of weeks ago in a very detailed fashion.
He’s broken down the gameplay section by section, noting several Marvel-oriented details, such as how Mr. Negative got involved with the game and is different from the usual level of villainy we’ve come to expect from Spider-Man games over the years (even though he’s clearly not the only villain in this game). He also notes how important a role Mister Negative plays with the plot, alongside Spidey’s actions.
While not every Spider-Man game that has come out over the years has shone brightly – he even admits that the last game he worked on, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, was “not one of the best Spider-Man games of all time by any means,” he still understands what’s supposed to go into a great experience such as this, and his fourteen-minute-plus analysis is really something, especially to die-hard fans that may have spotted an Easter egg or two over the course of the gameplay trailer.
For the most part, Baker keeps the comments positive, though he does have some thoughts on how the game will pan out, especially regarding the open world of New York City. But his input is quite valuable, and really leaves you wondering if he’s got a future breaking down future trailers like this. I mean, imagine what kind of input he could put into the forthcoming Square Enix Avengers project.
Spider-Man will release for the PlayStation 4 in 2018.
