Game Boy Advance and Sega Genesis Game Coming to PlayStation Store Next Month

A new PS4 game is releasing next month via the PlayStation Store. There is no PS5 version of said release, but it will be playable on the current Sony console via backward compatibility. The only modern console on which the game is currently available is the Nintendo Switch, and it has never been on a PlayStation platform before, making the new release even more noteworthy.

The PS4 game in question is The Legend of Steel Empire, a new release of Steel Empire. This classic game is coming to the PlayStation Store on October 9, via ININ Games. How much it will cost PS4 and PS5 users when it does, we do not know for certain, but it will presumably cost the same as it does on the Nintendo eShop, which is $24.99.

What Is Steel Empire?

Steel Empire is actually a game that dates all the way back to 1992, when it was released by Hot B for the Sega Genesis, as an exclusive for the Sega console. Then, 12 years later, it came to the Game Boy Advance in 2004. 10 years after this, it came to the Nintendo 3DS in 2014. Then it hit PC in 2018, and lastly Nintendo Switch back in July. Now it’s coming to PS4.

As for this version specifically, it is a port of the PC version, which itself is derived from the 3DS version, a remake of the Sega and Game Boy Advance versions of the game.

For those completely unfamiliar with the game and its premise, it is a steampunk side-scrolling shoot ’em up from the golden age of the genre, where you take to the skies and take on an evil empire trying to conquer the world.

Steel Empire wasn’t the most popular game back in its day, whether talking about the Sega Genesis version or the Game Boy Advance version, yet it continues to return every decade or so; first via the 3DS, then the PC, and now the Nintendo Switch and PS4. And for fans of this era of gaming, it is a decent, nostalgic return to an increasingly forgotten time in gaming history.

While it may seem odd for the PS4 to get new games 12 years after the console’s release, five years into the PS5 generation, it’s actually still somewhat common. While there are reports that Sony itself is preparing to end support of the console, new games continue to come to it regularly. To this end, one of 2026’s biggest games is rumored to have an unannounced PS4 version.
