Disney announced today that their Marvel game, Marvel Heroes, is being shut down for good as the company severs ties with the game's publishers.

Speaking to Kotaku in an email statement, a representative from Marvel discussed the game's end and their relationship with publishers Gazillion Entertainment.

"We regret to inform our Marvel Heroes fans that we have ended our relationship with Gazillion Entertainment, and that the Marvel Heroes games will be shut down," the statement to Kotaku read. "We would like to sincerely thank the players who joined the Marvel Heroes community, and will provide any further updates as they become available."

Marvel Heroes is an MMO that was released back in 2013 for the PC, but it later made its way to consoles as it landed on the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One earlier in the year. The game boasts over 60 diverse heroes that players can choose from including Spider-Man, Mr. Fantastic, Ghost Rider, Black Panther, and Dr. Strange with more characters being added in the past couple of months.

The news quickly made it to the forums for the games, forums that have gone dark for some time now with little news coming from the developers. Those who commented on the post expressed various sentiments of frustration and disappointment, an expected reaction to one of their favorite games being shut down, but the closure of the game wasn't entirely unexpected to many.

Despite receiving new characters and other content updates within the past several months, the news updates became sporadic with those monitoring the forums occasionally popping in to say that they had no news yet about the game. As Kotaku noted, the game also missed several key events where there could've been easy tie-ins with movies and other special occasions. Weekly community updates trickled off and went missing for a couple of weeks and the content that was supposed to be released alongside Thor Ragnorak never made it into the game.

An official announcement from Disney and Marvel will likely come soon to confirm the end of Marvel Heroes, so check for it here or within the Marvel Heroes forums to get more information when it's available.
