The medieval role-playing PC game Mount & Blade is now available on GOG for the low price of free, but the sale isn't set to last long.

Beginning on Friday, the game became free until 9 a.m. ET on Sunday, May 21, leaving players just one weekend to pick up the sandbox style game. This isn't the first time that the game has been available for free, though; Mount & Blade could be downloaded for free once in 2014, but this opportunity gives players a chance to make up for possibly missing it the first time around.

Mount & Blade doesn't spend a lot of time building up the plot. Rather, it leaves much of that development up to the player to control. It begins with a character creation screen like many other RPGs, and the player's actions in the game will affect dialogue and gameplay options as the game progresses.

At the time of its 2008 release, the game was praised for its intricate combat system and the use of mounted combat. It didn't do quite as well in other areas though, as it was criticized by some outlets as having repetitive quests and some lackluster graphics. The mod community surrounding the game was more than enough to make up for shortcomings though as there are plenty of mods available for the game.

The weekend sale is, of course, a welcomed gesture, but it also serves another purpose. Mount & Blade: Warband, the standalone expansion to the original game, was released in 2010, and the game is gearing up to have its very first esports tournament this weekend. With the partnership between the game's developer TaleWorlds Entertainment and the Lithuanian Esports Federation, a tournament will be hosted on Saturday as the players clash in Warband. Twenty players will be competing in the team mode for the tournament, and eight players will be competing in the duel mode. The tournament can be watched live via TaleWorlds' Twitch channel.

To round out the sale, the rest of the Mount & Blade series is also discounted on GOG. The entire series includes Mount & Blade, Mount & Blade: Warband, and Mount & Blade: With Fire & Sword, the last of which is the most recent installation that was released in 2011.

A prequel to the first game called Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord is currently in production and is projected to be released this year, but an exact release date is not known at this time.
