New Battlefield 6 Trailer Starring Zac Efron Parodies Call of Duty

A brand new Battlefield 6 trailer starring Zac Efron and other celebrities takes a bit of a shot at Call of Duty. For decades, there have been longstanding rivalries between some of the biggest FPS franchises. Call of Duty was literally born as a Medal of Honor competitor with Activision even codenaming it “Medal of Honor Killer” in the early 2000s. Other franchises like Halo and Battlefield have also gone head to head with Call of Duty, inspiring fun match-ups. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 famously launched just weeks apart and had players split on which game they would choose.

Ultimately, Call of Duty has historically reigned supreme in terms of sales, but both franchises are still well-received. With that said, Battlefield 6 has sort of positioned itself as a remedy to Call of Duty this year. Call of Duty has gone mostly unchallenged for a number of years which has created some frustration among fans. As a result, Battlefield 6 has been developed with critiques in mind, such as avoiding goofy skins that crossover with major brands that don’t fit the game’s aesthetic. It has seemingly put the pressure back on Call of Duty to do something similar, prompting Black Ops 7 to scrap plans for crossover skins.

Battlefield 6 Takes a Jab at Call of Duty in New Trailer

With all of that said, a brand new Battlefield 6 live-action trailer seems to take a direct shot at Call of Duty. The new ad features Zac Efron, Jimmy Butler, Morgan Wallen, and Paddy Pimblett as the four different classes and they pull up to the warzone in style. However, their cool entrance is quickly ruined after they get blown up by a rocket, killing all four of them. The trailer than transitions to 4 nameless, regular soldiers who showcase the various “only in Battlefield” moments that will be possible in Battlefield 6.

It’s a playful jab at Call of Duty, as the franchise is known for having celebrity-heavy trailers and marketing. Efron is even rocking a golden AR and Pimblett has a decked out sniper rifle, not too dissimilar to Call of Duty’s weapon skins. This Battlefield 6 ad also uses Bullet With Butterfly Wings by The Smashing Pumpkins, a song used in the COD Next multiplayer reveal trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, but that part may just be a coincidence. It also feels like it further supports the idea that Battlefield 6 is focusing on a grounded, authentic military warfare aesthetic and isn’t leaning on big flashy pop culture icons.

It’s a pretty well done ad and it’s getting a lot of praise from fans. Some players were upset yesterday when the various celebrities began teasing this trailer on their socials, feeling like Battlefield 6 was already pulling the rug on fans who were excited about a grounded experience. However, it was all a big red herring.

Battlefield 6 will release on October 10th. What do you think? Leave a comment below and join the conversation now in theย ComicBook Forum!
