When it comes to open-world survival games, there’s no shortage of solid options these days. From creature collectors like Palworld to horror games like The Forest, there’s something in this genre for every gamer. Whether you want cozy, grueling, or LEGO, joining up with your friends to build a base is easier than ever in 2025. But when it comes to “best of” lists and Steam charts, one survival game has been dominating since 2021. And now, PS5 owners are about to get a chance to join in the action.

If you haven’t guessed, the game I’m talking about is the Viking-inspired Valheim. This game from Iron Gate AB and Coffee Stain Publishing launched into Early Access on Steam back in 2021. From there, it quickly became a go-to point of reference for the survival genre, and for good reason. Valheim may be in Early Access, but it still routinely pops up on the Steam charts with upwards of 40K concurrent users. For a game four years in the making, that’s quite an achievement. And recently, Coffee Stain announced that Valheim is headed to the PS5.
What to Expect from Valheim on PS5
Valheim is celebrating its PS5 arrival with a stunning announcement trailer narrated by none other than Neil Newbon, aka Astarion himself. The game will arrive on the current-gen PlayStation sometime in 2026, but you can get a feel for the game from its latest trailer:
The open-world survival game recently got a massive update on Steam and Xbox consoles. The Call to Arms update proves that Iron Gate is still working on making Valheim great, even after years in Early Access. This latest addition added new combat mechanics, new creatures, new crafting materials, weapons, and more. Combined with the upcoming pending PS5 release, this is all part of the road to finally getting the full 1.0 launch of Valheim.
When it arrives on PS5 in 2026, Valheim will indeed still be in Early Access. But coming to this new platform will expand the audience even more above and beyond the 12 million copies already sold. With that many players, it’s impressive that Valheim has maintained its Very Positive rating even after years in Early Access. That’s due in part to the multiple massive new updates that continue to make the Viking-themed open-world survival game even better. The ability to enjoy multiplayer servers with friends is another huge part of Valheim‘s appeal, and now, even more peoeple will be able to jump into the fray.
For those who are eager to join in with the Viking adventures of friends already playing Valheim, there’s more good news. The PS5 release will support crossplay with those already enjoying Valheim on PC and Xbox. So long as everyone has updated to the most recent version and enabled crossplay, you’ll be able to join up on the same server and build your Viking Kingdom together.
Iron Gate provides pretty frequent updates on Early Access progress on Steam. The team isn’t quite ready to reveal when Valheim will arrive in 1.0, but with the pending PS5 release, even more players will be able to see what the game has to offer so far. A specific PS5 release date hasn’t yet been set, but we know it’s coming in 2026. Valheim currently costs $20 USD in Early Access and is available via Xbox Game Pass.
