The Pokemon Company has announced plans to distribute the “Ash Hat Pikachu” to Pokemon trainers with copies of Pokemon Sun and Moon. However, some fans might not be very happy with how the Pikachu will be distributed.

On September 19, the Pokemon Company will post a special passcode on Pokemon.com that will unlock a special Pikachu wearing one of the six hats Ash Ketchum wore during his travels around the Pokemon world. Which hat the Pikachu wears is determined by when players redeem the code. The dates are as follows:
- September 19โ25: Ash’s Pikachu (Original Cap)
- September 26 โ October 2: Ash’s Pikachu (Hoenn Cap)
- October 3โ9: Ash’s Pikachu (Sinnoh Cap)
- October 10โ16: Ash’s Pikachu (Unova Cap)
- October 17โ23: Ash’s Pikachu (Kalos Cap)
- October 24โ30: Ash’s Pikachu (Alola Cap)
Unfortunately, players will only be able to receive one version of Ash’s Pikachu per game, so they’ll have to choose wisely. Once the code’s been redeemed, players can’t change their mind and switch out Pikachu’s hat. It’s unclear whether players can at least trade for the other Pikachu variants, since Ash’s Pikachu is technically the same Pokemon.
In Japan, players could obtain all six Pikachu variants, although they needed separate codes to obtain each one. Players in Japan could get codes by pre-ordering tickets for the new Pokemon movie that came out earlier this year.
Ash’s Pikachu also has a special Z-Move that can be unlocked when it holds the Pikashunium-Z Z-Crystal and knows the move Thunderbolt. The Z-Crystal will unlock the 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt move, a mighty Electric-Type move attack that has a high rate of critical damage. At this time, it’s unclear whether Ash’s Pikachu will hold the Pikashunium-Z Z-Crystal or if it will be distributed in a separate event.
