Z-Moves are a new feature first introduced in Pokemon Sun and Moon. If a Pokemon is holding a Z-Crystal, they can use a special Z-Move once per battle. While most Pokemon use Z-Moves based on their Move Type, a few Pokemon have special Z-Moves that sync up to specific moves.
Clangorous Soulblaze is a boosted version of Clanging Scales, Kommo-o’s special move. While Clanging Scales usually lowers Kommo-o’s Defense after using it, Clangorious Soulblaze will boost all of Kommo-o’s stats when using it. More importantly, Clangorious Soulblaze is the first Z-Move that can target multiple Pokemon at once, which means it will get a lot of use in competitive play.
Kommo-o joins pretty exclusive company by getting its own Z-Move. There’s currently 11 Z-Moves exclusive to specific Pokemon…although Pikachu can learn two types of Z-Moves because it’s the face of the Pokemon franchise.
In addition to Kommo-o getting a new Z-Move, the Pokemon Company also hinted that other Pokemon would get exclusive Z-Moves in Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. One likely candidate is Mimikyu, as early footage of the game has shown Mimikyu using a new type of move with shadowy claws peeking out from under its disguise.
