The Pokemon Company has several things in the works across games, shows, movies, everything, and for years, it seemed like it was untouchable — but one game has emerged as a rival: Palworld. Developed by Japanese studio Pocketpair, Palworld released in January 2024 into Early Access and gave gamers a new way to experience an open-world, monster-collecting game. However, instead of Pokemon, it was Pals. And although it quickly became a global hit, it wasn’t a completed game.

Pocketpair has now unveiled plans for Palworld‘s anticipated 1.0 release and departure from its Early Access period. In a development update posted to YouTube, Palworld communications director, known online as Bucky, detailed the mindset and expectations for 1.0 and announced that the game is planned to fully launch in 2026, five years after it was initially revealed to the public.
Players Should Expect Less Palworld Content Until 1.0
Because Pocketpair is nearing the end of Palworld’s development and the studio needs to focus on fine-tuning the game for its 1.0 release, there will be fewer updates to the Early Access version over the next few months. โ[This] means that things will be a little quiet from us for the rest of the year,โ said Bucky. โIt also means that our winter update wonโt be as big as Feybreak was. We hope our players understand that weโre taking this extra time to improve the game overall.โ
Although Palworld has come a long way from its early jank, bugs are still a common part of the experience. Despite occasional issues, it remains impressive that this titleโs quality and creativity feel comparable to AAA releases. Itโs even more of a triumph when considering that Palworld is dealing with lawsuit threats from Nintendo and is being tossed around at the whims of new patents that affect its gameplay systems.
With this announcement of a 2026 release date for the full version of the game, it will be directly competing against the recently announced Pokemon Pokopia, a survival crafting take on Pokemon that is also coming in 2026. Will we see a repeat of the dynamic when Palworld released into Early Access in 2024? During that time, Palworld took the internet by storm to become one of the most played Steam games of all time while also taking the shine away from a Pokemon series that had become somewhat complacent and stale. Now in Palworldโs wake, Pokemon Legends: Z-A will see a much more dynamic combat system than past games, and Pokemon Pokopia seems partly inspired by its competitorโs success.
I hopeย Palworldย achieves a massively successful 1.0 launch, rivaling its initial player explosion in 2024. The game has built up a lot of goodwill by listening to player feedback and continuing to update the game with substantial content and quality of life improvements. As a long-time Terraria player, I immensely enjoyed the recentย Palworldย collaboration, despite it adding smaller areas to the game compared to past updates. Iโm okay with the trade-off of having less content to look forward to in the near future if it means that the 1.0 release will be truly spectacular.
