Following word last month that a 2019 PS4 console exclusive was returning, another PlayStation console exclusive has made an unexpected return. This time, the game is from 2015, when it was released on PS4 and PS Vita, as well as PC. At launch, it was a PlayStation exclusive, and this did not change until four years later in 2019 when it came to Nintendo Switch. Then, two years after this, the game came to Xbox One. Since then, nothing has really happened with it, until now.

The PS4 and PS Vita game in question is Nuclear Throne, one of the first PS4 indie hits. Developed and published by Vlambeer, Nuclear Throne is a post-apocalyptic top-down bullet-hell with roguelike elements that boasts an 89 on Metacritic, a score that made it one of the highest-rated games of its year. Not only does Nuclear Throne turn 10 years old this year, but developer Vlambeer turns 15 years old. To celebrate, the game’s 100th update is going to be released on December 5 — the game’s original release date — bringing with it C-Skins for all 13 characters, a new custom difficulty mode, localization, support for 60+ FPS, and “many more quality of life features.”
Steam First, Console Later
The update is going to be the biggest the game has received in years; however, it’s only going to be on Steam. That said, it sounds like the plan is to bring it to consoles at a later.
“The update will be releasing on Steam at first, and then once the most horrible bugs are out of the way, weโll do our best to bring it to other platforms as well,” writes Vlambeer over on X.
Does Nuclear Throne Hold Up in 2025?
Unlike some games from 2015, Nuclear Throne still holds up in 2025, and that is because it didn’t and doesn’t rely on state-of-the-art tech. In this regard, the game hasn’t really aged. You could argue that more games have done what it does since its release, making it perhaps a little redundant, but the quality of the game is the same now as it was back in 2015.
PS4 Support Reportedly Coming to an End
This news comes amid reports that Sony is preparing to stop support for the PS4 in the near future. It also comes on the back of Sony updating the console to remove select features from it. Suffice to say, the PS4 is on its way out; however, even if this happens, Nuclear Throne will remain accessible to PlayStation fans via PS5 and PS5 Pro, where the game is playable and purchasable via backward compatibility.
