Report: Are We Getting A New Thief Movie And Game?

A little while back, Eidos and Square Enix attempted to rejuvenate the Thief franchise with an all new game. It certainly attracted a fair number of fans, though some weren’t so crazy about some of the features in the new adventure. But don’t worry, it appears that the team will get another chance to make things go a little smoother.

A film studio called Straight Up Films recently revealed that a new game for the series is currently in development, and we might just be getting a film based on the franchise as well. The studio noted, “Steeped in the steam-punk world created by the video game, the film will tell a new chapter in the storied world of the series’ hero.”

The film is currently being written by Adam Mason and Simon Boyes, whose previous work Misconduct featured Anthony Hopkins and Al Pacino. There’s no word yet on a potential director, or who will be stepping into the shoes of the infamous Thief.

As for the game, there’s no word on what’s happening with that yet, as neither Square Enix or Eidos have commented on it. More than likely, Square may be waiting to reveal information about the return of Thief at E3 in just a few weeks, and may even tease what’s happening with the film at that point. Plus, the studio is still making decisions behind-the-scenes, after ending its relationship with Hitman developer IO Interactive late last night.

The last Thief game in the series, as noted above, came back in 2014, when it launched with a new first-person perspective and a lot of techniques – again, something that wasn’t quite well-received with fans of the series. But perhaps this new title, if it exists, will provide a blast from the past, while keeping true with the tone of the forthcoming film.

Once everything is officially announced – and we get more information on who else will be involved with the Thief production – we’ll let you know the details. In the meantime, if you want to get into the mood for what’s to come, it never hurts to check out the 2014 release. It’ll take some getting used to, but it’s certainly not bad.
