The team behind the rebooted Wolfenstein series seems to believe that a third game will still happen. In 2014, MachineGames, a studio comprised of ex-Starbreeze developers, released what would be its first game: Wolfenstein: The New Order. It was a reboot of one of gaming’s most beloved franchises and a genre-defining series, so the stakes were high. However, the game was a massive hit. It was funny, violent, and a total blast to play, allowing Bethesda to ultimately set up a one-two punch of acclaimed Wolfenstein and Doom reboots two years apart. A few years later, MachineGames developed Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus which was arguably even better and teed up a third game perfectly.

There were spin-offs in the years following such as the ill-received Wolfenstein: Youngbloods, but fans held out hope for a third game to round out BJ’s story. Alas, MachineGames had other plans as it was given the opportunity to make Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. The team spent years working on that game and when it released, it was met with high praise from critics and fans alike. Now, an Indiana Jones sequel seems all but guaranteed and fans are wondering if we will ever see Wolfenstein 3.
Wolfenstein 3 Has Always Been Part of MachineGames’ Vision for the Series
As part of a recent documentary on MachineGames, YouTube channel Noclip spoke with a number of people from the studio to talk about the team’s time with the Wolfenstein series. At the end of the video, they lingered on the fact that there’s unfinished business with the Wolfenstein series. Studio head and game director Jerk Gustafsson talked about how they envisioned the Wolfenstein games as a trilogy from the start and figured out what BJ’s ultimate arc would be throughout the entire story. As a result, they are committed to seeing Wolfenstein 3 through to the end.
“That journey for BJ, even during those first weeks at id when we mapped out New Order, we still had the plan for that character what would happen in the second one and what would happen in the third one,” said Gustafsson. “I think that’s important to say, at least I hope, that we are not done with Wolfenstein. We have a story to tell.”
Of course, it’s anyone’s guess on when that could happen. MachineGames has expanded over time and there has been hope that Wolfenstein 3 will get made as a result. Perhaps an Indiana Jones sequel and Wolfenstein 3 could be made concurrently if there’s enough people, but it’s hard to say. It would be pretty absurd if we got two Indiana Jones games in the time it took to finish the Wolfenstein trilogy, so it feels pretty likely that if it’s going to happen, it will probably be MachineGames’ next title. On top of that, a Wolfenstein TV series is in development at Amazon, so it would make sense to compliment that eventual release with a new game, but that’s pure speculation.
