The servers for an Xbox 360 game, backward compatible on modern Xbox consoles, have been abruptly resurrected. It’s par for the course that a video game’s servers will shut down eventually. These things cost money to maintain, and once people largely abandon these games, it becomes futile to continue supporting them. It’s unfortunate, but it is the life cycle of online gaming. It’s sad for those who like to go back to games or maybe are experiencing them for the first time. There are entire generations that will never be able to experience the original online multiplayer modes of games like Halo 3 pre-Master Chief Collection, for instance.

There has even been some controversy over some games being essentially totally unplayable after servers shut down. Due to some games being centered around online capabilities, there aren’t plans in place to keep the games alive once the servers go offline. They’ll essentially be paperweights. Concord is a very recent example of this. The game was released and then the servers shut down, meaning anyone who still has a copy of it basically has a game that only runs an error message and maybe some logos. But there isn’t a playable game there, at least not one without massive workarounds.
Far Cry 2 Servers Return by Surprise
It’s unheard of for a game to get shut down and come back without getting a new release. However, Far Cry 2‘s Xbox 360 servers awoke this week and no one really knows why. As reported by True Achievements, users are claiming that Far Cry 2‘s multiplayer servers are back up. The servers for Far Cry 2 were taken offline several years ago, but this return will allow some players to go back and get any multiplayer achievements that they may have missed. Sometimes this can happen by mistake and we’d assume that’s likely what happened here.
As a result, these servers may be pulled back offline any day now. Given its the holidays, this could take a few days, so if you want to play Far Cry 2 online, now is the time to do so. You may not have another chance ever again. If you’ve never played it, Far Cry 2 is a solid immersive shooter. It’s pretty different from later entries, as 2 has more hardcore elements like gun jamming, having to take medicine to manage malaria, and much more. It’s an interesting game and one worth playing if you have the opportunity.
