James Gunn Explains The Love Star Lord & Gamora Have

Minor Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Spoilers Ahead

Anyone who has seen the first volume of Guardians of the Galaxy knows that one of the likely plot threads in the sequel was going to be a growing relationship between Gamora and Peter Quill aka Star-Lord. And when the first trailer dropped we knew we were not wrong. Mantis exposed Peter's, well... love for Gamora, who looked even more un-amused than she usually does with Quill's antics to get her to pay attention to his feelings.

The film, again - minor spoilers here - delves into that relationship even more. It's been four months since the end of the GOTG Vol. 1 when the sequel opens to a fantastic musically set battle scene. It doesn't seem that much has changed - Quill is still playing the hurt puppy, to Gamora's seemingly disinterested usual self. But quickly as the film moves forward and the discussion of family between the Guardians keeps popping up, we see Gamoras cold green exterior start to crack.

In an interview with MamaSmiths.com James Gunn published this week, the director explains his intentions on building that relationship.

“At the end of the movie we have a moment between the two of them where something is acknowledged. Zoe and I actually talked about this for a long time – about having a kiss in the movie. We tried to treat these characters with such respect and such love. Gamora is a character who would not be swept up in the moment by passion, and if she was, I think she would have to deal with the ramifications of that. I don’t think she would be easy on herself about it. I think at the end, what we see between the two of them is a truer love story. Where she loves him, and he loves her – and she acknowledges that at the end of the movie – but that’s a love that’s based not only on attraction but on a really deep friendship that the two of them have.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is now packing theaters, grossing $145million over opening weekend so it's no surprise that it currently stands at #3 on ComicBook.com's All-Time Comic Movies with a 88.01 and a 4.70 out of 5 from fans.
