If you watched tonight’s episode of Agents of SHIELD, then you know the series is about to get turned on its head. The most recent story arc of the drama saw Team Coulson inundated with LMDs, leaving them unable to trust anyone around them. By the end of tonight’s episode, audiences were finally let in on who was and wasn’t a life-model decoy. Only Daisy and Simmons managed to escape from being scanned, but the two are now on a mission to rescue their comrades. With the help of LMD May, the women were able to enter the Framework and experience a strange alternate reality where Hydra reigns supreme.
So, as you might expect, a very familiar face will be coming back to the show thanks to the Framework. Yes, Grant Ward is back and looking better than ever.
Over on Twitter, the official Marvel page confirmed Brett Dalton would return as Ward in a short video. The clip sees the actor holding a script labeled “Identity and Change” before he is called off to set. The footage then fades to black, showing the logo for Agents of SHIELD which then turns into a gruesome shade of Hydra green.
To make sure fans know the are serious, the team behind Agents of SHIELD even went so far as to clarify Ward’s return in interviews. One of the show’s executive producers went on to confirm the return of Dalton in a chat with Entertainment Weekly.
“We figured when you get dropped into an alternate reality, what better way to show that it might not be everything you imagined than the return of one of our most loved and most hated characters. Also, we wanted to have Brett back. We missed him,” Jed Whedon said.
As for how Daisy will react to Ward’s return, fans will have to wait and see. But, for now, Whedon says it “sounds about right” that she isn’t happy about the ordeal.
