After saving the entire galaxy from Ronan the Accuser, even though only two months have past, the Guardians are now well known across the cosmos and feeling like rock stars. Filmmaker James Gunn wanted their costumes in the sequel to reflect their new attitude and celebrity status.

Academy Award-nominated costume designer Judianna Makovsky explained how she brought Gunn’s vision to life. “The costumes in the first movie were absolutely brilliant, but I think James wanted to go from there and make them a little bit more real, and like I said, have a bit more of a rock star feel to it,” she told Fashionista “So they were a little more slim-fit and just a little bit more reality-based, rather than superhero-based. In keeping with the same techniques that the clothes were made in the first film, we just went from there and did new versions that were a little more slim, a little less crazy.”

As for Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), his look is similar to the one he sported in the first film; however, he did receive sexy pants, a new coat, and different tee shirts. Below, you will find finalized concept art of Star-Lord that conceptual artist Andy Park created.

“This was the approved concept design I did of [Star-Lord] for [Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2],” Park wrote on his Instagram page. “James [Gunn] didn’t want a big change in his look but wanted a more relaxed rock star vibe with this one.”

Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

Early Mantis Concept Art

Makovsky told Fashionista, for the Mantis costume, she took inspiration from the comics. “It was just a matter of finding a technique with the leather to make it more interesting than just a flat leather panel of skirt,” she explained. “Woven leather in there was fun to do. There’s an open-work, woven, double face leather; it’s black and green and twists and petals up the arm.”
