It’s not unfair to say that Marvel Studio’s villains have lacked some depth up to this point, but The Russo Brothers are aiming to change that stigma with Avengers: Infinity War.

While the Infinity Gauntlet event in the original comics has the conqueror known as Thanos aiming to court Death herself, Infinity War might be tweaking his ultimate goal for the film. Co-writer Stephen McFeely took part in the recent Infinity War featurette on the home release of Doctor Strange. He describes Thanos’ ultimate goal, and you’ll notice some differences (via LRM).
“His goal is to re-balance the universe as he sees it. So when he figures out that the Infinity Stones could do this for him at the snap of a finger, that becomes his main goal.”
What “re-balance” means is anyone’s guess, but it most likely does not include the pursuit of Death. It possibly alludes to the rising number of superpowered beings in the universe, and the Infinity Stones would be one way to wipe them all out at once in that whole “no more mutants” way.
It’s not unusual for Marvel to change up their storylines a bit from the comics to the big screen, and the afterlife and more supernatural elements like Death haven’t been truly introduced yet to the cinematic universe. It makes sense then that they would go a slightly different route.
Avengers: Infinity War is sitting quite high on ComicBook.com’s Anticipation Rankings at 4.45 out of 5, but if you haven’t submitted your vote yet you can do so here.
