The arrival of Sentry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has completely shattered the power scales that fans have debated for years. As depicted in Thunderbolts*, the character, also known as Bob Reynolds (Lewis Pullman), is an individual burdened with the “power of a million exploding suns,” granting him a staggering array of abilities, including immense strength, speed, invulnerability, and the power to manipulate matter. The film also explored his severe mental instability, a core aspect of his character that is intrinsically linked to his dark alter-ego, the Void, a malevolent entity that emerged and unleashed catastrophic destruction. This duality makes Sentry one of the most complex and dangerous figures in the MCU.

With Pullman reprising his role in the massive crossover event Avengers: Doomsday, the threat Sentry represents is now on a cosmic scale. His internal struggle is expected to be a central conflict in the upcoming film, with Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.) likely exploiting his fragile psyche for their own ends. This sets the stage for a conflict that few heroes are equipped to handle, as Sentry’s power is greater than most of the Avengers combined. While a direct victory is impossible for most, a handful of characters possess the unique skills and sheer power necessary to at least hold their ground against the golden guardian’s might.
3) Thor
As the Asgardian God of Thunder, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) remains one of the mightiest Avengers, and his raw power makes him a primary candidate for a physical confrontation with Sentry. Thor’s strength already allowed him to fight toe-to-toe with the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and his durability is perhaps his greatest asset. This is a hero who withstood the full, concentrated energy of a neutron star to forge his axe, Stormbreaker, demonstrating a level of resilience that few in the universe can comprehend. In addition, his command over lightning and weather, channeled through his enchanted weapons, gives him a versatile arsenal for both offense and defense.
Thor’s abilities ensure that, in a direct clash, he will not be instantly overwhelmed by the Sentry. However, a definitive victory is questionable. Thor’s primary method of combat is direct physical assault, which is ineffective against a being who, as far as we know, is practically invulnerable. Plus, the true challenge lies in Sentry’s unstable mind and the emergence of the Void, a being capable of trapping Thor in a world of shadows where he’ll be forced to relive the many traumatic experiences of his life.
2) Professor X
Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), as one of the most powerful telepaths on the planet, presents a strategic alternative to a physical assault. His powers allow him to bypass Sentry’s invulnerable body and directly influence his mind, which Thunderbolts* established as his greatest weakness. Charles Xavier’s willingness to engage with overwhelming psychic power was demonstrated in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where he entered the mind of the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) in an attempt to free her from the Darkhold’s corruption. This makes him uniquely qualified to target the human side of the conflict, Bob Reynolds (Lewis Pullman), offering a path to victory that does not involve trading blows with an unbeatable physical opponent.
This entire strategy, however, hinges on Xavier succeeding before the conflict can properly begin. Unlike heroes who can engage in a prolonged battle, Xavier has a frail body and could be easily destroyed by the Sentry. His mission is to connect with and calm Bob Reynolds in the opening seconds of the encounter, before the Void can unleash his powers. If he is even slightly too slow, the Void’s defensive reflexes will trigger, instantly neutralizing him and causing his entire high-risk, high-reward strategy to collapse.
1) Loki, God of Stories
Having ascended to a new plane of existence, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) is no longer a mere sorcerer but a fundamental component of reality itself. At the conclusion of his titular series, Loki became the God of Stories, the living anchor of the multiverse who sits at the end of time, single-handedly holding the infinite branches of the timeline together. This transformation grants him mastery over time itself. He can move through past, present, and future at will by manipulating the timelines, allowing him to operate outside the conventional flow of cause and effect.
Loki would not need to fight Sentry in a conventional sense, as he could simply rewrite the conditions of the battle. Rather than engaging the Void — a messy and unpredictable affair — Loki could simply go back and prevent the experiment that gave Sentry his powers in the first place, solving the problem without a single casualty. Still, as the guardian of all timelines, any change Loki makes could have catastrophic effects, which might not justify taking down the Sentry.
