The Power Rangers didn't storm the box office gates like fans or the studio had originally hoped, and with that disappointment comes the uncertainty of a sequel. There's already some fans that are trying to make sure one still happens.
The danger level hit an all-time high with the film's disappointing debut in China on Friday, banking only $1.2 million. That has spurred fans to start getting some momentum swinging in the other direction, including a new Facebook group called "Make Power Rangers Great Again for ALL Ages." The group's mission statement reads "Regardless of whether you liked the recent 2017 movie or not, I hope we are all here for a common goal: To see the Power Rangers brand thrive beyond the TV seasons that most of the OG fans pretty much grew out of which still target little children."
"I, like you I assume, don't want a bad movie to be the end of the Power Rangers franchise expanding to audiences beyond little children and I would like to create a platform for like-minded people to gather and do something about it. I'm not sure what it is yet and that's where folk like you and hopefully many others come in." The group is just starting out, but it isn't the only rally cry for fans. The "Morphin' Legacy" page has also posted a message on Twitter, calling for all Power Rangers fans to let Lionsgate know a sequel is needed.
The post reads " Keep the Hope Alive! The Fight Isn't Over Yet! #PowerRangersMovieSequel @lionsgate @powerrangers @thepowerrangers #PowerRangers #PowerRangersMovie #TogetherWeAreMore *Tweet @ all of the mentioned Twitter accounts and let them know YOU want a Sequel!*
It seems a petition isn't far in the offing. As for chances of a sequel, the film has only made $135 million worldwide against a $100 million dollar budget, but that doesn't mean it won't get a sequel. It's just the odds right now aren't so great.
The action-packed, coming of age feature film Saban's Power Rangers will morph onto Digital HD June 13 and on 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack (plus Blu-ray and Digital HD), Blu-ray Combo Pack (plus DVD and Digital HD), DVD and On Demand June 27 from Lionsgate. As part of the 24-year-old global phenomenon and based on the five Rangers from the original TV series, "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers,", the reimagined movie features a modern generation of Rangers including Dacre Montgomery (TV's "Stranger Things") as Jason the Red Ranger, Naomi Scott (The 33) as Kimberly the Pink Ranger, RJ Cyler (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) as Billy the Blue Ranger, Ludi Lin (Monster Hunt) as Zack the Black Ranger, and Becky G. (Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising) as Trini the Yellow Ranger, as they attempt to stop the evil and unpredictable Rita Repulsa (played by Elizabeth Banks, The Hunger Games Franchise) from destroying their city…and ultimately the world. Bryan Cranston ("Breaking Bad") as Zordon, and Bill Hader (Finding Dory) as Alpha 5 train the Rangers to morph and master their powers as a united team.
