Valiant Entertainment's Shadowman is one step closer to coming to the big screen.
Reginald Hudlin, who who has Marshall hitting theaters later this year, will helm the movie for Valiant. Hudlin and Salem showrunner Adam Simon will also rewrite the film's current script, which was written by J. Michael Straczynski. Straczynski remains a part of the project as an executive producer.
Shadowman follows Jack Boniface, a New Orleans musician who is imbued with the power of a spirit called a Loa. As the new Shadowman, he must defend the Earth from demonic threats, invasion from the supernatural underworld called the Deadside, and the machinations of his sinister opposite number Master Darque.
Shadowman was originally created by Jim Shooter, Steve Engelhart, and Mike Manley in 1992. When Valiant relaunched in 2012, a new Shadowman series was launched and ran for 16 issues plus a three issue miniseries finale.
Shadowman has a cult following who have been begging for his return to comics. The character is currently appearing in the Rapture event series, which will lead up to a new Shadowman series in 2018.
Shadowman is currently being developed in-house at Valiant before being shopped to studios. The Sean Daniel Company's Sean Daniel and Jason Brown are producing alongside Valiant Entertainment's Dinesh Shamdasani.
This will be Hudlin's first superhero movie, but he has a history writing for the genre in comic book form. He wrote Marvel's Black Panther series for four years and helped revive the Milestone Comics brand and characters for DC Entertainment. In addition, Hudlin wrote the comic book adaptation of Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained and co-wrote the crossover follow-up Django/Zorro
Shadowman is just the latest Valiant property pushing ahead. Sony Pictures has a five-film deal in place to bring Valiant's Harbinger and Bloodshot to screen, eventually culminating in a Harbinger Wars crossover. Archer & Armstrong is being developed in-house by Terry Rossio and Zombieland's Ruben Fletcher. The Russo Bros. are developing Quantum and Woody for television, and Valiant Digital is currently shooting the web series Ninjak vs. The Valiant Universe.
In Ninjak vs. The Valiant Universe, Colin King is Ninjak, MI-6's deadliest intelligence operative, and weapons expert. When the ruthless assassin Roku exploits his greatest weakness, Ninjak will be forced to betray his closest allies. Now, on the run, he must face off against the most powerful heroes known to man for a high-octane, take-no-prisoners trial by fire more perilous and more unpredictable than any he's faced before. In 2017, the world's most dangerous super-spy goes to war with the Valiant Universe…
