Spaceballs 2’s Avengers Actor Casting Sets Up Its Most Exciting Star Wars Parody

Fans of comedy and galaxies far, far away rejoiced last week, after Amazon MGM officially announced the cast for Spaceballs 2 in a photo that bears an uncanny resemblance to the Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens table read snapshot. Production has officially commenced on the sequel, which is set to be released in 2027. We were delighted to see many of the original actors who brought the now-iconic Star Wars parody to life were returning, like Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga, Bill Pullman, and even Spaceballs director Mel Brooks. Yet the new additions to the cast may in fact be the most exciting, especially since Bill Pullman’s son, Lewis Pullman, is allegedly parodying Kylo Ren in the Spaceballs sequel.

Pullman is Perfect as Kylo Ren-Type Character for Several Reasons

In the first Spaceballs, Bill Pullman played Lone Star, the dashing leading man who was quite clearly an amalgamation of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo. And in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, Kylo Ren is the son of Han Solo and Princess Leia’s son Ben. Having Lewis play Pullmans’ son in the movie perfectly mirrors the Star Wars sequel dynamic Spaceballs 2 is trying to send up. Plus, Bill and Lewis have a lifetime of father-son bonding to pull from for their onscreen roles. Furthermore, the younger Pullman did an excellent job showcasing both his comedic chops and his dark side in Thunderbolts* earlier this year as Robert Reynolds. His character had to walk a razor thin line between being the unassuming comic relief as well as being the Thunderbolts’ biggest obstacle as the hero Sentry and the all-consuming entity The Void. Pullman rose to the challenge, making Robert, or “Bob”, one of the most complex characters in the Marvel film that’s swiftly been embraced by its fandom.

Furthermore, the brooding, overly serious nature of Kylo Ren is ripe for parody, no matter who’s doing the parodying. Adam Driver, who actually played Kylo Ren in Episodes VII through IX actually made fun of the character himself in a pair of viral Saturday Night Live skits, where the Sith lord participates on the reality show Undercover Boss. With comedic filmmakers Mel Brooks and Josh Gad both pulling double duty on the sequel in front of and behind the camera (Brooks is producing, Gad co-wrote the script), we’re sure that their send up of Kylo Ren will be nothing short of side-splitting. Especially since Keke Palmer is playing a character named Destiny, who sounds a lot like a parody of Jedi Rey. Pullman and Palmer have the potential to make another uproarious comedy duo, especially if Gad and his co-writers plan to make fun of the weird connection Rey and kylo Ren shared through the sequel trilogy. Whatever their plans may be, it certainly seems that the Schwartz is in good hands for Spaceballs 2.
