The Batman 2 Has Already Made Its First Mistake (But There’s Still Time to Fix It)

Director Matt Reeves has confirmed a huge omission from the cast of The Batman: Part II, which could be the much-anticipated sequel’s first major mistake. Comprising DC Elseworlds projects, Matt Reeves’ Batman Epic Crime Saga is set outside James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DC Universe, and stars Robert Pattinson as the titular Dark Knight, while Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobb has also been developed in The Penguin. 2022’s The Batman has been celebrated as one of the best interpretations of the Caped Crusader yet, but its highly-anticipated sequel might have already made a huge mistake.

The Batman: Part II is currently scheduled to hit theaters on October 1, 2027, with Matt Reeves returning as director, and Robert Pattinson, Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell expected to reprise their roles. The Batman pitted Bruce Wayne against the Riddler (Paul Dano), who targeted Gotham City’s wealthy and corrupt elite, while The Penguin spinoff series saw Oz Cobb go toe-to-toe with the Falcone crime family in a battle of Gotham’s villains. Unfortunately, The Batman: Part II will be missing one of the best aspects of the Batman Epic Crime Saga’s first TV series.

Sofia Falcone Won’t Be in The Batman: Part II

Cristin Milioti just earned an Emmy for her performance as Sofia Falcone in The Penguin, a role which earned her a huge amount of praise and recognition. Sofia was the daughter of Carmine Falcone (John Turturro in The Batman and Mark Strong in The Penguin) and a presumed psychopathic serial killer who took over the Falcone crime family and transformed it into the Gigante crime family – her mother’s maiden name – following her father’s death. Sofia became a terrifying villain in The Penguin, but she unfortunately won’t be returning in The Batman: Part II, as Matt Reeves has confirmed to MTV.

Reeves notes that Cristin Milioti will be missing out on The Batman: Part II because work on the sequel’s script was already so far gone when The Penguin was released on HBO Max. It seems nobody expected Milioti’s Sofia Falcone to become such a major hit, which means she was left out of early drafts of The Batman: Part II, and subsequently won’t be appearing in the project at all. While this is disappointing, Reeves does state that “it’d be really exciting to do something with her,” so there’s still a chance for Sofia Gigante to return after The Penguin.

The Penguin Probably Won’t Be the End For Sofia Falcone

The Penguin explored Sofia Gigante’s rise to power in Gotham City after being released from Arkham Asylum. She uncovered the truth of her false imprisonment, but also showed off the psychopathic tendencies that she learned while incarcerated, and truly became the villain of Gotham – though Oz Cobb’s influence and manipulative tactics even bested her. In The Penguin’s finale, Oz and Vic’s (Rhenzy Feliz) plan ends with Sofia being taken back to Arkham, seemingly ending her story, but one final tease hinted at her return in future projects in the Batman Epic Crime Saga.

Sofia Gigante was presented with a letter from Selina Kyle, her half-sister, while incarcerated in Arkham Asylum in The Penguin’s finale. Zoë Kravitz portrayed Catwoman in The Batman, and while her return in The Batman: Part II has recently been disputed, it’s possible more of her history and connection to the Falcones could be explored in the upcoming sequel. Filming on The Batman: Part II hasn’t even begun yet, so Cristin Milioti could be included at the last minute, and there have been discussions surrounding The Penguin season 2, which would be the perfect place for her to return.

How the DCU’s New Batman Will Be Different From Matt Reeves’ Version

It seems very likely that Cristin Milioti’s dark and twisted version of Sofia Gigante will be returning in future Batman Epic Crime Saga projects, expanding the world of Matt Reeves’ The Batman brilliantly. Simultaneously, however, James Gunn and Peter Safran will be introducing a brand-new Batman into the rebooted DCU. Since Reeves’ franchise is so dark, grounded, and gritty, it seems likely that the DCU’s Batman will take on a more lighthearted and vibrant tone. This would allow the new Bruce Wayne to fit in alongside the likes of David Corenswet’s Superman, John Cena’s Peacemaker, and more.

We’ve already caught a glimpse of the DCU’s Batman as a silhouette in Creature Commandos, but the Dark Knight is expected to make his live-action debut in The Brave and the Bold. It seems unlikely that a new version of Sofia Falcone will debut in the DCU, especially since Milioti’s iteration is so popular, so it is essential that The Penguin’s Sofia returns in full force. The Brave and the Bold is likely to include other formidable female villains, such as Talia al Ghul, but Sofia Falcone’s future is less clear after being omitted from The Batman: Part II.
