In June 2018, the world will be overrun by dinosaurs yet again. Jurassic World 2 is slated to hit theaters in a couple years, and production on the blockbuster is expected to start after the new year rings in. Director J.A. Bayona is starting to prepare for the long shoot ahead of him, and he took time to explain just how the sequel will be darker than its predecessors.
In an interview with Coming Soon, Bayona said Jurassic World 2 will have political subtext threaded throughout its storyline. “I think there’s a lot of that in the new ‘Jurassic.’ I think there’s a lot of possessiveness towards our creations,” he said.
“I think it’s very interesting where the new movie is heading. It’s so different from the other films, it talks a lot about the moment we live in right now. It’s darker… but at the same time it’s going to be a lot of fun. It’s a blockbuster, you have Chris Pratt, it’s a great adventure, but it’s very interesting the way the film is darker than the other ones.”
Of course, this is not the first time Bayona has talked about Jurassic World 2 details though it is the first time he’s mentioned politics. In October, the director sat down with El Mundo to talk about the sequel, and he described how Jurassic World 2 would feature contemporary social issues such as animal captivity.
“Dinosaurs are a parable of the treatment of animals today: abuse, experiments in medicine, pets, having wild animals in zoos [that feel] like prisons, military use being made of them,” Bayona explained.
Producer Colin Trevorrow also commented on the film’s socially aware story. He said the film will discuss society’s consumeristic greed and very deliberately “shift to deal with complex issues.”
For now, fans will have to wait and see how Jurassic World 2 intends to thrill fans with its thrilling, dark story. The film has been described as a “darker” and “scarier” installment, so fans will be eager to learn more about the sequel once production kicks off in March 2017.
