has an interview with Joss Whedon, director of The Avengers, where he seems to suggest that he'd be game to come back for more, but bemoans a little bit of what he lost in the transition to the final cut of the film. "I spent some time with some of the ancillary characters because I thought we needed more of a human perspective," Whedon is quoted as telling MTV. "As it turned out people really just did want to see the Avengers." That's an interesting problem for Whedon to have, given that reports coming out of screenings are that at least one of the "ancillary" characters plays a major role in driving the plot. What are the odds that, when the film comes to DVD and Blu-Ray later this year, fans will be treated to a director's cut, a la Green Lantern's home video release? The site also quotes Whedon as singing Marvel's praises when it came to fulfilling his directorial vision:  "They only ever moved it forwards and collaborated and supported me," said Whedon, who has faced some challenges in the past as his pet projects have suffered from low ratings and underwhelming box office returns. "I gotta tell you, that's unusual from a studio." MTV perceives those comments as a willingness to come back for more.That would be a nice change of pace for the studio, who have had to change directors for the in-development Thor 2, Captain America 2 and Iron Man 3. Big-budget adaptations outside of Marvel have been facing similar challenges of late, with Gary Ross backing out of the Hunger Games sequels and, of course, the Twilight and Harry Potter franchises going through a number of directors before they were finished.
