At the 2016 Golden Globes, The Martian took home the award for Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. Other nominees in the category included Joy, Spy, The Big Short, and Trainwreck.
It was the second Golden Globe of the night for the film. Earlier in the night, The Martian's star Matt Damon won the Golden Globe for Best Performance By An Actor In A Motion Picture Musical Or Drama.
Director Ridley Scott accepted the Golden Globe for The Martian. Scott was also nominated for Best Director, but he did not win in that category.
In accepting the Golden Globe, Scott's first comment was about winning in the comedy category. The Martian was submitted in the Musical or Comedy category by 20th Century Fox, and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association approved the film in that category, because The Martian did have comedic elements.
However, there was much outcry about the film being included in the Musical or Comedy category, and Scott himself seemed to act like he considered it a little bit of a stretch. Scott said, "Comedy? But anyway I'm very grateful for this."
